Adelene SL Chiam

Miss Adelene Chiam graduated with a Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine and Bachelor of Medical Research (Hons) from the University of Tasmania (UTAS). Currently, she is a final year PhD candidate at the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre. Her research project focuses on generating an in vitro blood-brain barrier model using human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). She has extensive experience with the culture and characterisation of various iPSC-derived cell types which include neurons, astrocytes, pericytes, and endothelial cells. Thus far, she has contributed as a second author of a protocol paper and has presented her research findings at various conferences, both at national and international stages. In addition, she has recently received the Image Award as well as Best Presentation Award from the Australia and New Zealand Society for Cell and Developmental Biology (ANZSCDB). Apart from her developing work in medical research, Miss Chiam is also a member of the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS) and has also been actively involved in teaching / academic support roles, such as being a graduate representative on the Tasmanian School of Medicine Biomedicine Course Advisory Committee.
